Greene County ARES operated as W8GCA for Ohio NVIS Day this past Saturday, April 22, 2023. John Westerkamp, W8LRJ, set up at Walnut Grove Park in Beavercreek, OH, Greene County, at gridsquare EM79xq. Power was provided by a 12 volt,15 Ah LiFePO battery with solar charging. The antenna was a G5RV on a mast at 15 feet for NVIS operation. W8GCA made 6 contacts including the Sarge W8SGT in Columbus and the District 3 DEC, KD3WCO. It was a very interesting exercise in setting up a portable antenna system and battery operation, and a very useful learning experience for future emergency communications.
